âYeah,â Lance Chambers said in a stoic voice. âOkay, youâre both there, right? Okay, listen. You might have a problem. That thing you described to me? I was half right. Itâs not a straight-out vampire.â
âItâs not?â Sweeney asked.
âItâs not. My guy tells me itâs a manananggal.â
âA many-angle what?â
âA manananggal,â Chambers repeated.
âSay it in English.â
âI am saying it in English. Mana-nang-gal.â
âChrist, couldnât you just call it Sally or Bucky or something?â
The line went silent with an irritated vibe.
âAll right, all right, a mana fuck me gal,â Sweeney whispered, pinching the bridge of his nose.
âManananggal,â Ice repeated, nailing it the first time.
âThatâs it,â Chambers verified.
âOkay, one of us can say it,â Sweeney muttered.
âAll right,â Lance said. âAnyway, this thing isnât a vampire.â
âI think itâs a vampire,â Ice mumbled dubiously.
âYeah, well, I think you should just wait until I finish, okay? Since itâs your ass in the dinner sling.â
That shut Ice up.
âOkay.â Chambers brought himself under control. âAnyway, itâs not a vampire. Itâs got vampire characteristics, granted, but itâs not a true vampire. Some say the thingâs a witch. Other sources say itâs a demon returned to earth. Regardless, itâs a can of pressurized shitstorm held to your ear if you encounter one, and itâll drain your ass of blood like a thirsty alcoholic at an open bar. And we figure if itâs not a manananggal, itâs a breed thereof. But even if itâs a breed of some kind, thereâs a chance the one after your asses might have some of its weaknesses.â
Sweeney and Ice exchanged a look above the phone.
âNow, listen, okay?â Chambers continued. âIâve got good news for you and bad news. The bad news is, if it is a manananggal or some kind of offshoot, itâs going to be hard to kill. Thatâs the bad news. The good news is⦠you can kill it.â
âGreat,â Sweeney said, not overly enthused. âHow do we do that?â
âItâs dark now, right? The sunâs gone down?â
âYeah. Long ago.â
âAnd youâre in a room covered in salt?â Chambers asked.
âAh, yeah. Floor is. And some of the windowsills.â
âOkay, more bad news.â
Sweeney and Ice winced.
âThe only way to kill the thing is when itâs split in two, okay? With these things, you have to find the bottom part of the body. The waist down. Find that andâââ
âDrive a stake through it?â Sweeney interrupted.
âNo, not a stake. Smear salt over the exposed part. The part with the raw guts.â
The two men regarded each other with horrified looks.
âYou guys still there?â
âYeah,â Sweeney said.
âAll right, listen, as nasty as that sounds, itâs the only way to kill it. You have to defile the lower half with either saltââwhich you haveââor ash. Either of you smoke?â
Ice shook his head.
âNo,â Sweeney reported.
âToo bad. Okay, you have the salt. Gather up what you can of it, okay? Find the lower half and smear salt into the raw bits.â
âHowâs that supposed to kill it?â Sweeney asked.
âIâm getting to that,â Chambers answered testily. âJust relax and listen. Okay, Sween? You listen, and you concentrate on what you have to do, because from the sound of it, youâre in for a long night.
